MERT Refresher and Reevaluation Course
Just like swimming, driving or even computer literacy, Basic Life Support (BLS) or First Aid are one among the essential skills that one individual must also be equipped with. Our Tambay Alay sa Buhay group was trained with the knowledge, skills and attitude of a first aider. We have first trained them last April 3 and 4 of this year.
Now, back for our 4th exposure, we have given them a refresher course. It was a half day activity held last October 11, at the Barangay Health Station, still. At first, it was disheartening to see only 4 of them back, when originally there were 13 of them.
Now, back for our 4th exposure, we have given them a refresher course. It was a half day activity held last October 11, at the Barangay Health Station, still. At first, it was disheartening to see only 4 of them back, when originally there were 13 of them.
The list stopped at number 5, the 5th being a community health team member, which means, this will be her first time, and that she is not part of the original group. With high hopes, we still continued our refresher training. We started off with a 15-item written exam. To our surprise, there was even 1 of them who aced the exam! And even Ma’am who was a first-timer even scored 11/15. It only shows they were all really paying attention. It actually gave me a little flashback of how we were last April. My favorite part was the simulation part since there were patients who acted like real victims and I could still remember how they really fell for it. I also remember how much they thanked us and how much happy they were receiving those simple tokens and prizes we gave after the evaluation. Now, going back, after the written exam, we have reviewed to them all the topics we have discussed. These include: Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Foreign Body Airway Obstruction (FBAO), wound care, fracture, seizure, loss of consciousness and proper transport to a health care facility. We have invited them to a training with the barangay officials on October 13. It will serve as their post-evaluation and return demonstration on how well they have remembered the competencies taught to them. Finally, everyone was given a group shirt wherein they really have appreciated it. They really were excited about it and used them right away in our group picture. Truly, another successful implemented activity.
And so, as I have mentioned above, last October 13, we have trained the barangay officials of Delusom. This was actually a request from Kapitan. However, the call time of 8AM never happened. As Filipinos, we always feel relaxed knowing that everyone will understand whenever you’re late. But this one’s a different case. When people came, they only came for the registration. Some came back, some did not. And so, we started the training by 9:30 already. The morning was reserved for purely lecture and demonstration. Everyone was really eager and enthusiastic. Questions kept pouring in and funny stories as well. That was actually the fun part. The afternoon came and it made us feel hopeless. Some did not come back while some remained. Some were new and continued on with the return demonstration. This was the funniest part of the training so far. The konsehals gave their all-out acting whether choking, seizure or loss of consciousness! The best part was seeing the Tambay Alay sa Buhay group assisting us in the return demonstration. They really did it with excellence, I must say. It was their interest which let them stay. I must congratulate each one of them for really doing a job well done. We as trainees, with the help of our Delusom friends, are so proud of them. We hope they will be able to apply these competencies in Delusom, their barangay. Till the next exposure!
