It was the first Saturday of the month, 5th of April, just after our 2-day training on Basic Life Support (BLS) and other medical emergencies; we also conducted a refreshment course training on BLS and emergency procedures for the Mahayag Emergency Response Team (MERT), Philippine National Police (PNP) and Barangay Emergency Response Team (BERT) of Barangay Panagaan. This was held at the hall of Department of Agriculture in coordination with the Mahayag Municipal Office and Mahayag Municipal Hospital headed by the Chief of Hospital and our community preceptor, Dr. Jerald Ramos. Honestly, our team was not really prepared for this training. We have delegated tasks just the night before this day and everyone burnt the midnight candle (literally, because of the blackout as well). Our team was assigned in the lecture, demonstration and return demonstration on the following topics: Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) led by Kuya Dada and Kuya Waz, Foreign Body Airway Obstruction (FBAO) by Rose and I, Fracture by Ate Shiela and Ate Tin, Wounds (Clean, Bleeding and Impaled Objects) by Yas and Twinx, Loss of Consciousness and Seizure by Don and Maryam.
In the morning, we started our lecture and simultaneously, our demonstration. We noticed that when we tried to make our lecture interactive, some of the participants were hesitant to answer even though they know the answer. Even this was only a refreshment course, some maybe forgot and could not recall BLS and emergency procedures anymore. Yet, as the training went on, they became more cooperative and participative. Afterwards, we also did a special return demonstration on the topic of CPR, since we felt that this is one of the most crucial and most basic emergency procedure that a response team ought to know. And of course, the fun part was the simulated scenario that Team Panagaan created. Doc Cocoy really requested for the road to be secured by the police. At the scene, we were amazed not only by the realistic prosthetics but also by the convincing and almost genuine drama by the actors of Panagaan. It looked very real since even the passersby, motorists and passengers in rural buses were shocked and terrified by the scene. I remember those children who happened to pass by the scene saying, “Naa pala shooting diri.” I really laughed upon hearing that comment. What also was funny were the trainees whom were trying to put their patients in the ambulance. Three of the groups tried to put in their three patients all at once in the ambulance! It really was a hilarious site. There was even a group who stole some splints from the other group just to manage the fracture of their patient. They really played wise. Everyone passed the simulated scenario and everyone was awarded with a certificate that they truly are certified BLS trained individuals.
Overall, we got positive feedbacks from MERT and from Doc Cocoy. Boasting aside, he really was pleased and proud by what the Mahayag Team have done. This project was initially his initiative since he saw the need to train these individuals for a better prognosis when patients arrive at the hospital as well as so they can carry out what their name stands for, as emergency response team. It was not only the MERT, BERT and PNP who learned in this training, we also learned a lot from this activity. We learned to be physician-teachers. We also learned how to mingle with authorities like them, not feeling superior to them nor feeling young and inferior, but just the right blend. We also learned to work as a team with Panagaan despite the stressful events that happened prior this activity. All in all, the training was indeed a success. Congratulations Team Mahayag! J
