Hypertension has been a problem worldwide. In our Barangay Delusom, cardiovascular disease ranked as number cause of mortality for many of the residents. As our response to this emerging problem, we, the medical students assigned in Barangay Delusom taught of ways to counteract this problem. One of our proposed solutions was the formation of a core group that would be known to all as the “BP Patrollers”. As part of this said proposal, the core group will serve as the key people that will lead the community in solving their own problem. The “BP Patrollers” core group will be composed of at least 2 persons from each of the purok where they are situated. In that way, they will be accessible to the people since each purok will be having their own key persons.
We, the medical students, planned on training this group to have the proper knowledge, skills and attitude on dealing with problems regarding hypertension. Health education, blood pressure measuring and monitoring, and proper referral for emergency cases were the highlights of the training. The main goal of the activity was to increase the awareness of the community people on the problem of hypertension and at the same time, improve their health seeking behavior.
We, the medical students, believe that sustainability of an activity aimed in improving the Barangay can be achieved if the community people themselves are involved.
