According to the famous quote of President Barrack Obama, “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” Change is the word we always perceive since day one in medical school. Accompanied by this word draws another word “catalyst”, uniting the two becomes “Catalyst of Change”. We are 10 medical students of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University who were dispersed in our chosen community, the barangay Delusom situated at the Municipality of Mahayag, Zamboanga Del Sur. 10 people are bound to generate a transformation to the lives of the people of barangay Delusom.
One of our learning strands of our curriculum includes the population medical strand. It focuses on the practice of medicine as applied to a group or population. It basically trains us to be skilful in epidemiological data gathering, identification of health care needs of the people, proper utilization of available resources in the community. Also stated in the vision of the medical school is to be responsive and sensitive to the needs of the community that we do not exist only for ourselves, but also for others.
We are sent in our respective communities to help provide solutions to the health problems. We are there to FACILITATE the people in solving health problems thru intersectoral approach; we are NOT there to solve their problems. Protecting and promoting the health of the population requires intersectoral and interdisciplinary approaches to health promotion. Health promotion will involve helping people to increase their knowledge and awareness to live a healthy and productive life.
As the facilitator and catalyst of change, we have formulated comprehensive community health plans which will be implemented on our succeeding exposures. These health plans will give support to the community and to its people on focusing in the delivery of primary health services. It focuses on the promotive and preventive aspects rather on the curative side. We believe that focusing on these aspects will help improve their lifestyles and make the community healthy and lessen their burden on certain problems and stigma. We are also aiming that our plans and project in the baranggay will be sustained until we leave the community.
We are starting a change in these far-flung areas, where health care delivery is very scarce. In our own modest way, we believe that we can make a big change. A little and simple scheme and health plans, but gigantic impact to the lives of many.
